Pitt County Increases Census Response Rate
Pitt County's Census numbers look even better than 10 years ago. The County increased mail back participation by 9% from Census 2000. As of today, the County's response rate is 71%, on par with the national response rate of 72%.
North Carolina was also recognized as a top responder, increasing its mail back response rate by 8%.
Pitt County's Complete Count Committee, comprised of Pitt County Government staff, elected officials, and other members of the community, worked really hard to get the word out to help participation rates. The Committee formed a Census Road Tour subcommittee, which was responsible for organizing and holding a Census Day Event in March. The event revolved around the US Census Bureau's Portrait of America Road Tour, part of the largest civic outreach and awareness campaign in U.S. history, according to the US Census Bureau. There were approximately 150 people in attendance.
The committee also held 14 other meetings and presentations promoting census awareness, rallied 8 local governments to work together to promote the census, secured Census Bureau Partnership funds to produce local promotional items, produced census materials to meet the needs of special groups, coordinated volunteer translators for the Hispanic residents of our communities, and more.
Citizens who did not mail back a form can expect a Census enumerator to knock on their doors in order to receive the needed information. These workers should have official Census badges and bags. We encourage all citizens to participate.
Thanks to all citizens who participated in this year's Census.
