Pitt County Government Accepts UPS Foundation Grant for Homelessness Prevention Program
Pitt County Government recently accepted a $10,000 grant from the UPS Foundation. The grant will be used to support Our Journey Home: 10-Year Plan to End Chronic Homelessness in Pitt County.
The UPS Foundation was established in 1951 as a way to focus on UPS’s commitment to local communities. As a philanthropic and charitable organization, the UPS Foundation focuses on issues such as community safety, literacy, health care, education, hunger relief and homelessness prevention.
Pitt County and the City of Greenville adopted the 10-Year Plan to End Chronic Homelessness in Pitt County in September 2008, establishing for the first time a community-wide effort to prevent chronic homelessness. The 10-Year Plan focuses on strategies for prevention and crisis stabilization, services and support, and permanent housing solutions for the chronically homeless inside Pitt County. The 10-Year Plan was developed by the Blue Ribbon Task Force, a group of local officials, community leaders, and educators.
The $10,000 grant was presented by UPS Greenville Center Manager of Operations, Steve Wilson; UPS Division Manager for Eastern North Carolina, Nicole Brandon; and UPS Chief Operating Officer for the Carolinas, Rich McArdle. Pitt County accepted the check in the Commissioners Auditorium of the County Office Building on Wednesday, October 7.
Attending the presentation were Pitt County Manager Scott Elliott, Pitt County Chairman Melvin McLawhorn, Pitt County Planning & Development Director James Rhodes, Paulette White, 10-Year Plan Project Manager, Greenville Mayor Pat Dunn, Greenville Mayor Pro-tem Mildred Council, and Dr. Robert Thompson, professor of Political Science at East Carolina University and Chair of the Advisory Board for the 10-Year Plan.
