Pitt County Receives NCACC Award for Shingles Recycling Program
Pitt County Government’s Solid Waste Department has won the North Carolina Association of County Commissioner’s 2008-2009 Local Government Federal Credit Union Employee Productivity award for its Shingles Recycling Program. This is the 18th year the NCACC has offered the award, and the first year that is has been sponsored by the LGFCU.
The Pitt County Government Shingles Recycling Program is run by the Solid Waste Department. Pitt County is the first county in the State to implement such a program, which is designed to reduce waste in the county’s landfill and other surrounding solid waste centers.
Once shingles are brought to the Pitt County landfill, they are collected, sorted, and cleaned of debris such as wood, nails, plastics, or metals. The shingles are then transferred to Greenville Paving and Contracting, Inc., which recycles the old shingles into asphalt to be used for paving and repairing Pitt County roadways. In the first five months of the program, Pitt County Government has saved over $17,000 by recycling shingles.
Solid Waste Director John Demary and Recycling Coordinator Paula Clark received the award at the Hickory Metro Convention Center on August 28.
Pitt County Government is honored to accept the award, and continues to work to find ways to be more productive and efficient in all areas of government.
